The Stettler Wildcats senior girls’ basketball team from William E. Hay played in a 10-team tournament this past weekend in Bonnyville and placed fourth in a successful showing.
The Stettler girls started the tournament with a 48-45 victory over Glendon. The Wildcats played very strong defence throughout the game and were in control throughout, except for a short period in the third quarter when they had trouble scoring.
Glendon came very close to tying the game, but the Wildcat defence prevailed to hold onto the win.
In the semifinals, the Stettler girls faced Cold Lake, which was a real test due to their size and some very skilled players.
The Wildcats fought hard, but ended up losing 60-42, which put them in the bronze-medal game against Beaverlodge.
The Rebels from Beaverlodge came out running hard and utilized the fast break the whole game.
The Cats were unable to keep up the pace and ended up on the short of a 70-45 decision.
Despite the loss, the Cats improved on some key aspects of their game throughout the tournament, including their man-to-man defence and their willingness to shoot the ball in good scoring situations.
