Sunday afternoon crib tournaments continue to be popular here in Big Valley. At the Big Valley Inn, 12 players came out to play on Sunday, Feb. 5, including two visitors from Innisfail.
In first place was Bob Green, with Gladys Groat coming in second and Vi McCarty third. The booby went to Eileen Green, who was also this week’s lucky draw winner.
Big Valley Inn crib players would like to extend a special thank you to the provider of the scrumptious doughnuts. They were enjoyed by all.
At the Big Valley Drop In Centre, 12 players were out for crib this past Sunday. The players were happy to welcome two visitors from Drumheller — Alfredo Heigel and Arlene Hingst.
This week, Lynne Palmer came in first, Jim Paul was second and Linda Garstad came in third. The booby went to Keith Campbell.
Also at the Big Valley Drop In Centre, 12 people came out to play military whist last Friday night.
In first place were the team of Buster, Les, Alice- Faye and Yvonne. Second were Jim, Ed, Connie and Karen; third-place honours went to Margaret, Don, Allan and Geneva; and in fourth place were Kathy, Donna, Keith and Dorothy.
The next Military Whist night will be on Friday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.
Eleven ladies attended the January meeting of the Royal Purple. Two new members were welcomed into the Lodge at the initiation, followed by the very moving Pansy Ceremony.
Discussions were held regarding the upcoming District Meeting scheduled for April 4, with more details to come as information becomes available.
The next general meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28.
The Big Valley School is proud to present their first annual TALL TALES Literary Contest. Students from grades 5 to 9 will write a Tall Tale or Limerick as a part of their language arts assignments.
The entries will be judged by a panel of teachers and parents, with the top eight stories to be published in the Big Valley Whistle — two stories per week for four weeks.
The first two tall tales are scheduled to be published on Feb. 15, with two stories to follow on Feb. 22, 29, and March 7.
All entries will remain anonymous until the conclusion of the contest. The whole community will have the opportunity to vote on their favourite tall tale or limerick.
The voting will conclude and the winning authors will be revealed on March 17; St. Patrick’s Day.
We look forward to some entertaining reading and encourage the whole community to support the Big Valley School in this interesting endeavour.
Voting boxes will be available at the post office, Frontier General Store, Big Valley Inn, Village Office, Jensen Flooring and the Big Valley Municipal Library.
