Fencing club wins bronze
The Red Deer Fencing Club captured a pair of bronze medals in the University of Calgary’s Don Lazlo Memorial Cup during the weekend,
Zac Zanussi placed third in the U17 men’s sabre while taking ninth in the U17 epee.
Thomas Usher was third in the rec men’s epee.
Women’s epee saw Karren Lyver take fifth, Surina Elidrissi eighth and Alyson Biem 11th.
Elidrissi was seventh and Biem ninth in the U17 women’s epee.
Dakota Wohl was seventh in the U17 men’s epee with Thomas Lyver 12th and Cole Adam 15th.
Men’s epee saw Norman Wiebe take seventh, David Coates 15th and Usher 19th.
RDC men’s curling team wins silver
CAMROSE — Kalem Hamilton’s RDC men’s curling team captured silver at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships during the weekend.
Hamilton, along with third Dustin Vikse, second Justin Shantz and lead Cam Krejci, dropped a 5-3 decision to Grande Prairie in the final.
Earlier Hamilton lost 3-2 to Grande Prairie in pool play, then dropped a 7-4 decision to their northern rivals in the first game of the page playoff system. RDC then beat Olds 8-0 to reach the final.
Meanwhile, the RDC mixed team of skip Evan Asmussen, third Jennifer Roth, second David Senft and lead Brittney Raab finished fourth.
RDC went into the playoffs ranked third, but lost their opening game 5-4 to Concordia. Concordia went on to down Grant MacEwan 6-5 before losing 6-5 to Lakeland in the final.
Two members of the RDC men’s team — Hamilton and Shantz — were named to the first all-star team along with Raab from the mixed squad.
Catalina Hounsome wins two gold
SHERWOOD PARK — Twelve-year-old Kaitlyn Hounsome was a double gold medalist for the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club at the Alberta Age Group trials during the weekend.
Hounsome won the 400 and 800-metre freestyle finals and reached Alberta A Age Group qualifying times in both events.
Meanwhile, Kerri Huhn, 13, captured bronze in the 200m backstroke and 400m Individual Medley.
Hounsome will join 17 of her teammates at the Alberta Age Group championships this weekend in Edmonton.
Ski club slides to sixth place
The Red Deer Ski Club had a pair of sixth-place finishes in a Nancy Greene competition during the weekend.
Owen Green was sixth in the eight-year-old boys’ division while Samantha Sylvestre had an equally as good a result in the nine-year-old girls’ category.

Eight-year-old: 17th Jasmine Photinopoulos, 20th Keelie Phillips.

Eight-year-old: 19th Jared Oakes.
10-year-old: 11th Bennett Erickson.
Northey finishes third in dual moguls
Garett Northey, one of five Central Alberta Freestyle Ski Club members competing in the Canadian Junior Nationals near Truro, N.S., finished third in the M3 division of the dual moguls held Sunday.
Meanwhile, Megan Warrener was fifth in the F4 dual moguls and Collin Jefferies and Conner Koenen were eliminated during qualifications in the M3 and M2 categories.
In the slopestyle competition, Northey was eighth and Jefferies 15th in M3, and Brett Erickson was ninth and Koenen 16th in M2.
Warrener placed seventh in the F4 moguls, while Garett Northey was 13th and Jefferies 21st in the M3 moguls and Koenen finished 15th in the M2 moguls.
Erickson was the lone Central Alberta Club member to compete in big air, placing 12th.
Eagles sweep Grizzlys
CANMORE— Adam Stephen scored twice as the Canmore Eagles completed an Alberta Junior Hockey League first-round playoff sweep of the Olds Grizzlys with a 4-1 win Monday.
Tyler Horton and Stephen staked the Eagles to a 2-0 first-period lead and Stephen extended the advantage to 3-0 in the second period.
Grizzlys forward Jordan Kwas replied in the middle frame, but Kory Roy sealed the deal with a third-period marker as the Eagles took the best-of-five set in three games. Olds was zero-for-three on the power play, while Canmore was one-for-three before 473 fans at the Recreation Complex.
Sam Brittain made 28 saves for the winners. Grizzlys goaltender Marc Boulanger stopped 32 shots.
Sting takes U12 ringette gold
The Central Alberta Zone 4 Sting captured gold in the U12 division of the Alberta AA provincial championships in Edmonton during the weekend.
The Sting went undefeated, finishing with a 10-2 victory over the Calgary Valta in the final.
It was the second Alberta title for the Sting in the last four years.
Meanwhile, the U16 Sting placed fourth, losing 5-3 to the Calgary Prime in the bronze medal game.
As well, goaltender Brea Beck of Red Deer, helped her Calgary team to the U19 provincial championship and a berth in the national finals in Saskatoon in April.
• In U12 league action the Red Deer Bling downed Lacombe 2-1 in overtime to even their best-of-three 1-1. Lacombe won the first game 4-3 with the third game Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Dawe Arena.
Men's Basketball
Lee Sprunger dropped in 19 points to lead Carstar to a 63-55 victory over the Sorento Fatboys in Central Alberta Senior Men’s Basketball Association play Sunday.
Mike Asmus and Charles McLean added 10 points each for the winners while Brad David had 14 and Murray Cunningham 13 for the Fatboys.
Minor Hockey
Midget
The Red Deer Elite Sportswear Chiefs advanced to the midget C provincial hockey championships March 25-28 in Mallaig with a 10-7 two-game, total-goal victory over Red Deer Days Inn.
The Chiefs won the opening game 6-3 with the second game tied 4-4.
Peewee Girls
The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs team 1 downed the Olds Thunder 6-3 in exhibition play Sunday.
Becky Davidson scored three times for the Chiefs while Breanna Martin added a pair and Jenna Levie one. Erica Nelson, Kelly Leonard and Kiera Davidson scored for Olds.
Peewee
The Red Deer Holiday Inn Chiefs downed the Rocky Mountain House Vipers 5-3 in the opening game of the first round of the A league playoffs.
Ben Isaac, Ryan Vandervlis, Kyle Gibson Louis Leclerc and Caden Shybunka scored once each while Michael Ozga stopped 27 shots in goal.
Second game of the two-game, total-goal series goes Thursday in Rocky.
