Olds Grizzlys thrash Drumheller Dragons
DRUMHELLER — The Olds Grizzlys employed a potent and balanced attack in a 7-2 Alberta Junior Hockey League thrashing of the Drumheller Dragons Wednesday.
Luke Madill and Corey Campbell scored to give Olds a 2-0 lead after one period and Daniel Burkat, Cale Wright, Taylor Elliott, Chad Berglund and Matt Tinordi rounded out the Grizzlys’ attack with a goal apiece. Scott Kennedy and Evan Warner replied for the Dragons.
Marc Boulanger turned aside 17 shot for the Grizzlys, while Dylan Tait made 39 saves for Drumheller.
• Red Deer minor hockey graduate Erik Slemp of the Camrose Kodiaks will serve as captain of the South Division team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League all-star game Jan. 30 in Fort McMurray.
Fellow Kodiaks forward Clayton Jardine of Lacombe — another former Red Deer minor hockey player — will also suit up with the South squad, as will Boulanger and Grizzlys teammates Frank Carbonaro, on defence, and Campbell and Jordy Kwas up front.
Red Deer Vipers roll past Ponoka Stampeders
Ryan Blades recorded a hat trick and J.D. Morrical and Maverick Blair each tallied twice to lead the Red Deer Vipers to an 11-3 romp over the host Ponoka Stampeders in Heritage Junior B Hockey League action Wednesday.
Joel Pelletier, Justin Moir, Braden Corbett and Chad Knowles rounded out the Vipers attack, while Travis Kirchner potted all three goals for Ponoka.
Vipers netminder Mike Stonehouse made 17 saves. Nicholas Lischka blocked 45 shots for the Stampeders.
• Josh McIlravey fired three goals and Jason Bell scored twice and added three assists as the host Blackfalds Wranglers waltzed past the Rimbey Rocky 9-5 Tuesday.
Also scoring for the winners were Kurtis Ross, Brant Leischner, David Jantzie and Kyle Maas. Cale Walker, Joseph Schropfer, Ryan Link, Davin Waisanen and Ryan Petrie tallied for the visitors. Layne Swier and Tanner Schalin combined to stop 25 shots for Blackfalds. Rimbey netminders Joel Richards and Aaron Shukin made 35 saves.
The clubs split 10 minor penalties.
Cougars maul Lightning in basketball action
Megan Schmidt dropped in 17 points to lead the Notre Dame Cougars to a 62-27 win over Hunting Hills in JV girls basketball action Wednesday.
Jada Wright had seven points in a losing cause.
Hunting Hills prevailed 55-49 in the boys contest, as Josh Loney poured in 20 points for the Lightning and King de la Cruz scored 13 for the Cougars.
All-stars edge Fatboys
The Grandview All-stars got 19 points from Greg Carritt and 16 from Rick Feser in downing the Sorento Fatboys 80-72 in Central Alberta Senior Men’s Basketball Association play Tuesday.
Cam Kusiek had 17 points and Brad David and Jason Adams 15 each for the Fatboys.
In other action, Lee Sprunger had 33 points and Mark Salkeld 29 as Carstar beat HMI 117-89. Craig Johnston hit 27 points and Kaye Kroenenbusch 26 for HMI.
