Rimbey Junior/Senior High School boys and girls basketball teams rallied on their home court last week to win almost all their games, and are sitting in second and third place respectively in league play.

The Rimbey Spartans high school boys’ team shot their way to victory in both Monday and Wednesday’s games, defeating David Thompson High School 54-42 and then going on to crush Delburne 86-47.

Coach Tim Lekas said the Spartans hold second place in the league and will play league leaders, Central Alberta Christian School in Lacombe Feb. 6.

“We have a very young team with eight Grade 10 players,” he said. “David Thompson is a more experienced team. It was a good win for us.”

Lekas is hopeful he can take his team to provincials, noting the Spartans made it to provincials the last two years, finishing fourth last year.

“We have a pretty good team which is continuing to improve and develop. I think we have a good chance of qualifying for the provincials.”

The girls’ team, which also played Monday and Wednesday, lost narrowly to David Thompson, Monday. The Spartans held their own, but the scoreboard showed 49-42 for the visitors when the game ended.

They Rimbey girls team bounced back well Wednesday however, defeating Delburne 67-23.

Coach Jocelyn Olsen said the Spartans are third in the league, behind Central Alberta Christian School and David Thompson.

She is hopeful the team will make it to provincials, noting they missed out last year after losing to CACS in league play.

Olsen said the majority of her team is composed of Grade 10 girls with only three Grade 12 players on the roster. The coach is hopeful key player Jill Tennant, who is on the injured list, will be back in action by the middle of this month.
