In the last week, the Rimbey RCMP detachment responded to more than 50 calls for service.

Home unsafe home

Domestic violence was a cause for concern last week. Officers investigated 10 complaints of domestic violence. Arrests were made of uttering threats to kill, assault and other serious offences. Children and Family Services assisted in matters involving children in the home. The Rimbey Victim Services Unit also helped those in need. Alcohol was a contributing factor in many of these cases.

Drunk tourists ticketed

There were several more reports of folks drinking and driving. This week it was “out-of-towners” passing through Rimbey who had not yet got the message that drunk driving is not tolerated here. Several drivers lost their licenses and their vehicles. These motorists either have an appointment with the judge in Rimbey to speak to their actions or had their licences temporarily suspended for 24 hours.

Gas thief arrested

Police investigated more fuel theft complaints in the counties. In one case, a surveillance camera revealed a 48-year-old woman, a resident of the Rimbey area, was responsible for using a farmer’s fuel tank as a means of keeping her tank topped up instead of filling up at the local station. When you steal gas you not only lose out on “Air Miles,” you also get a visit from a Mountie who issues an “invoice” which costs way more than the original price was at the pumps in town.

Dog helps catch trailer thief

During the night of Jan. 31, a storage depot in Rimbey was broken into and a large enclosed trailer was stolen. Sylvan Lake officers patrolling the area followed a suspicious truck and trailer not knowing either had been stolen. When officers attempted to stop the truck the occupants tried to flee from police and got the truck stuck on a side road. The thieves ran from the scene. An RCMP police dog attended the scene and shortly after a 40-yearold man from Red Deer was arrested nearby. A second man has been identified and is currently being sought by police. The trailer was recovered with no apparent damages.

Lease site thefts continue

During the night of Feb. 1, someone broke into a compressor station on a lease site near the Last West Hall. Computers, tools and other equipment were stolen. In two other cases, police were dispatched to incidents where copper wire had been stolen from lease sites in the detachment area. Rimbey RCMP continue to investigate the matters with the assistance of the forensic identification section.

Scofflaws re-arrested

Officers monitor criminal suspects released on bail conditions in the community. This week several additional charges were laid and habitual offenders taken back into custody for failing to abide by their release conditions. In one case, a 27-year-old male, a resident of Rimbey, was arrested and remains in custody at the Red Deer Remand Centre for failing to follow his probation order.

Crime-fighting groups need volunteers

Your local detachment would like to thank all the fine citizens in the community who continue to volunteer their time and energy in an effort to make Rimbey such a wonderful place to live. If you have considered being more involved you may wish to consider organizations such as the Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol, Rimbey and District Rural Crime Watch or the Rimbey Victim Services Unit. These non-profit volunteer societies are very active and help make our community a safe place to raise our families. If you would like any information regarding any of these organizations, please call the detachment at (403) 843-2224.

If you have any information on these or any other crimes, please call the Rimbey RCMP at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477, #8477 on Telus Mobility or *8477 on Rogers AT&T.
