Rec board considers dog park
The four-legged residents of Rimbey may have a chance to run free if the recreation board can come up with a suitable location for an off-leash dog park.
The recreation board has looked at the possibility of setting up a dog park after a suggestion by Dawna Providenti was brought forward.
Providenti, a dog owner who sits on the rec board, supports opening an off-leash dog park.
“I feel very strongly about it,” she said. “I really think it would be beneficial for the town.”
Recreation board chairman Derry Armstrong said the board has discussed potential locations in the community, but no decision has been made.
“It would not be an expensive thing to set up. It’s just a question of doing some fencing,” he said.
Recreation director Rick Kreklewich said about five acres of municipal land north of the recycle depot has been identified as a possible location. However the site needs to be investigated to identify suitability and requirements for improvements. Potential costs also need to be looked at.
Kreklewich will assess the site and provide the board with a report at its February meeting.
Rimbey bylaw officer Joe Crockin said he has not received complaints about dogs who were running around town without leashes, however, he sees an off-leash park as positive for the dogs and their owners.
“It’s been beneficial in larger centres,” he said. “It gives both the dogs and their owners a chance to get out and get some exercise.”
