What are parents’ duties?

Dear Editor:

I am writing this letter after reading the letters by the Grade 6 students that were sent to our local police officers in regards to the DARE program the RCMP have dropped due to manpower shortage.

I feel these students and their teacher should be congratulated for the stand they have taken in regards to drug and alcohol abuse by youths today.

Now my question, “Why should the responsibility of teaching this program fall into the hands of our local police officer”?

It was nice of the police to do this, but should not some of this fall into the hands of the parents responsible for bringing these youth into the world?

When you look across the page from these letters and read the police court news it is quite easy to see why our law enforcement officers have no time to teach this DARE program.

It makes one wonder just what is our society coming to.

Could it be that instead of a DARE program for our youth maybe a course for adults entitled “The duties of parenting”?
