Students want RCMP to keep DARE program
Updated: December 13, 2011 10:12 AM
Dear Editor:
After reading a recent article in the Rimbey Review about the DARE program being canceled due to lack of funding, our class had a heated discussion.
Some students have written letters to the editor about this.

Dear Editor:
Hello my name is Dallas I am in Grade 6. I personally think we should keep the DARE program because the kids in Grade 6 and older need to know about how drugs DO NOT help with any problems. I understand that you are very busy and that you might not have enough time for DARE this year but it IS very important. The kids should know about how maybe in some point in your life somebody might offer you or someone you know drugs but you just have to stand up and say no. Please try to teach kids about DARE this year and in the future, too.
Dallas
Dear Editor:
I am writing to you about the DARE program. I understand that you do not have enough staff to carry out the program, but my classmates and I feel that it should not be canceled. This program is great to show the effects of drugs and alcohol and make you think about the long-term effects. My older brother was in this class and he said that he learned the effects of drugs and alcohol and his awareness could be crucial when he gets older. My classmates are also upset because we will not be getting this education that could be saving our lives and others. I believe you should consider doing the DARE.

Dear Editor:
I think that the DARE program should still go because it would teach the younger generation to know what drugs are and what the stuff could do to you. The DARE program is a great program that teaches kids to do the right choice and take the good side and you might give them an idea of what they want to do when they grow up. What I think you should do is that you should have certain people for the job and it might not cost as much. What I think is that DARE is a very good program to have because it teaches kids the rights and wrongs.
DARE should keep going because everyone looks forward to seeing the cops and learn what they do.
What I wish is that the DARE program will keep going.

Dear Editor:
Hi my name is Kolista, I am a girl in Grade 6 and I wanted to give you this letter to tell you something. I am worried about the DARE program, because then kids will end up doing drugs. So what I am saying is you should not cancel the DARE program. I think that if you did come and teach us it would change people’s lives when they get older. Then they will not smoke or take drugs. At my school (Rimbey Elementary School) no one takes drugs or smokes, but at the high school they always smoke in the morning and after school and it bugs me. So I think it gives kids a chance to see what happens to them if they smoke or take drugs. It’s really important to me, and I want to make a difference in the world.

Dear Editor:
My name is Cody Johns and I am a student at Rimbey Elementary School. We recently received word the Drug Awareness Resistance Education (DARE) program was shut down because of a lack of staff. I think this is not fair if you don’t have enough staff, well hire more. I feel as sixth graders, drug prevention is very key to life. A lot of drug dealers come to smaller towns and without DARE. I’m scared it might be hard for some of the Grade 6 classes this year to say NO. I think that the Rimbey police force should teach us DARE to avoid more crime for the future which since they refused to teach us this class will be from us. I don’t think they realize their making their jobs harder and putting are lives in more danger.

Dear Editor:
Hi my name is Taylor. I’m a girl in Grade 6 and I’m sending you this because I’m worried about the DARE program. I heard it’s a great chance to help people’s self-esteem. Well, at least us kids. It helps kids so they make the right choices in life. And this is pretty much for the RCMP but I thought this way they could read in the newspaper of how much we kids need it. It makes us and things better. In case some of us decide to do it, it’s good that they know what will happen to them. It’s really important to me. And I want it to help people. I don’t want people to do it. It makes people better… It makes our world better. So if you could do this for me that would be amazing it would make my day. I just need the RCMP to know how important this is. It should be continued. Thank you for caring!
Taylor
Dear Editor:
The DARE here in Rimbey has been canceled, which is disappointing to everybody in Grade 6. If you do not know what the DARE program is, it is a drug awareness program. The Rimbey RCMP say that there are not enough officers. I respect this decision, but it sucks because they say that they are too busy but the numbers are just going to increase if kids aren’t aware.
