Local electrician earns medallion of excellence

A young Red Deer electrician earned himself a medallion of excellence at the WorldSkills 2009 competition which wrapped up this weekend in Calgary.
Craig Spady, 22, was one of eight Albertans representing the 38-member Team Canada at the event which ran for six days at Stampede Park.
Spady, competing in electrical installations, was one of 20 Canadians to took the podium Sunday earning recognition for their achievements.
Team Canada took an impressive eight medals and 12 medallions in the event which attracted more than 900 entrants from 50 countries. According to Skills Canada, which promotes careers in skilled trades, this was Canada’s best overall result from any WorldSkills competition.
The event is held every two years.
Spady is an electrician at Q-2 Electrical Contractors Ltd., in Red Deer.
Spady’s event saw him install panels and devices and pieces of equipment and then wire it up.
Spady earned a point score of more than 500 which qualified him for the medallion.
He spent about four months practising and wiring and crimping. He also journeyed to France for training.
Spady earned the Team Canada berth by performing well at the 2008 Provincial Skills competition then winning the Canadian title the same year.
He also earned the distinction of becoming one of eight honourary parade marshals at this summer’s Calgary Stampede Parade for being named to Team Canada.
