Harold Albrecht knows a thing or two about what it takes to win at all levels of lacrosse.

So when the Red Deer Weatherford Renegades new boss says he has the talent to win the provincial junior B tier II lacrosse championships, you should believe him.

“We’re young, talented, quick and have the personality to be very successful,” said the long-time Red Deer Lacrosse Association president, coach and official.

But despite a 3-1 start to the season, Albrecht also feels the squad is far from where they’ll eventually be.

“We still need to show more restraint as we have several guys who want to go one-on-one, which can get us in trouble. We need to work more as a group . . . as a team. As well we have to play under control and with discipline. We can’t continue to take a lot of unnecessary penalties.”

The Renegades got themselves into penalty trouble Saturday as they finished with 28 minutes in penalties, but had enough talent to pull out a 12-7 victory over the Edmonton Blues in Rocky Mountain Junior B Tier II Northern League play at the Kinex.

The Renegades have seven players up from the midget ranks on their 20-man roster.

“Plus we have several guys who played junior before, took some time off and have returned to the team,” explained Albrecht.

Taylor Campbell, Ty Dergousoff, Dugan Dougherty, Daniel Jackson, Kevin Langlois, Ryan Matejka and David Westwood played midget last season while Drew Munce is new to the game.

“We have a lot of good young kids but they’re just starting to fit into the team,” said Albrecht. “As well because of the number of new players we’re still working on putting together our lines.”

Albrecht looks to captain john Lindstrand and assistant captains, Ben Langlois and James Schorr, as his leaders.

“They’re the veterans and the guys the coaches look toward to be the leaders in the game and in the dressing room,” Albrecht added.

Both goaltenders — six-foot-eight Joel Johnson and Jordan Mastel — have previous junior experience.

“We’re solid in goal . . . in fact solid in all positions,” added Albrecht.

Braden Casper, Zac Coubrough, Brad Hamblin, Michael Sargeant, Justin Schriener, Cory Stevenson and Morgan Werseen round out the roster.

Campbell led the Renegades against the Blues with three goals while Lindstrand added a pair and Coubrough, Dergousoff, Hamblin, Ben and Kevin Langlois, Stevenson and Werseen one each.

The Renegades led 10-4 before penalty trouble saw the Blues score three straight goals. However, Campbell connected twice down the stretch to put the game away.

Jess Chinnery is assistant coach with Kim Lindstrand and Ryan Schorr managers.

l Earlier Saturday, the Red Deer Road Train Revenge got a three-point performance — including two goals — from Logan Murias in a 9-4 loss to the visiting Okotoks Ice.

Chris Dennehy scored once and picked up an assist and Justin Connolly netted the other Red Deer goal.

l In junior girls’ action, the Red Deer Riot split a pair of games, beating the St. Albert Drillers 11-2 at the Kinex Sunday while losing 8-4 to the Sabrecats in Calgary Saturday.

Deanna Hume and Janelle Sullivan scored three times each against the Drillers while Katie Courte added a pair of goals and Paige Sweetnam, Hayley deBeaudrap and Leah Boucher singles.

Saturday, Hume and deBeaudrap scored twice each.

The Riot have a 5-2 record.

l Meanwhile in juior B tier I action the TBS Rampage dropped their Sunday afternoon tilt at home with the Saskatoon Swat 7-1.

The Rampage lost despite outshooting Saskatoon 41-30.
