From the moment one picks up a dripping paintbrush or massages soft clay in their hands, they are often hooked. Hooked on creating that is. It’s a form of expression. It’s a livelihood. It’s an escape. And for every artist, it’s the dream that what is in their hearts could take the shape of a physical, tangible, glorious beauty for all to appreciate.
Jillian Best, Visual Arts Coordinator at Red Deer College, had a teenage start to what is now a livelihood and growing passion. An RDC alum and graduate of the ACAD Printmaking program, Jillian is thankful for where her creative path has taken her.
She sees how RDC creates opportunities for the birthing of art. Such as the summer program for 15-17 year olds, Summerscapes.
“One thing that I appreciate about RDC is that the students who come for Summerscapes come at like 15 and can try incredible forms of art that I didn’t get to try until my degree program! They get the chance to perhaps find their passion earlier on,” says Jillian with a twinkle in her eye.
Technology is constantly changing. In fact, as soon as you bought your iPhone, there was something better, and likely more expensive, being designed. Our ever evolving society keeps people, and institutions, on its toes to keep up and current.
I sat down for coffee with Janet Welch, our Chair of the Centre for Teaching and Learning at RDC. She has been at RDC nearly 20 years, with stints here and there in the middle-east on technological ventures. Her primary goal is to work with faculty on improving teaching and learning at RDC. Developing support systems, so to speak.
Here is a bit of the “dish” on our conversation:
LL: What are some of the new initiatives taking place in the Centre for Teaching and Learning?
In a nation of nearly 45 million and with territory encompassing Amazon rainforest, tropical grasslands and oceanic coastlines, Colombia is a nation of extreme diversity.
A nation whose government corruption and violence tends to drive its inhabitants out in search of a more peaceful home.
For Vicente Moreno, Manager of Bee Clean services at Red Deer College, this was the very reason he has called Red Deer home for the past seven years.
He is an Accountant by trade with a Masters in Taxes from Colombia. Vicente would travel for work and went to the US to see his brother and thus began the discussion of attempts to find somewhere better to live, for his family. One brother decided to come to Canada and check out the country.
What do deficits, the earthquake in Haiti and High School Musical have in common?
It has affected much more than just one person.
While neither can sufficiently be included in the same sentence and gather precisely the emotion that goes with each, specifically Haiti, all have had great impact.
I won’t claim to be an economist, but I have seen and heard of cut backs, budget trimming and lay-offs. Worldwide, billions of dollars have either been lost in the recession that people predicted, but didn’t necessarily prepare for.
As the west sun shines in Maria’s window, she is reminded that the students whom she is so dedicated to, she has not yet even met.
They could be studying in B.C. or the prairies of Saskatchewan, but for Maria Cicman, her greatest fulfillment comes not from standing in the classroom herself, but knowing there is a mom on the other end of the computer line who is reaching for a long-anticipated goal.
Maria Cicman, Chair of the Educational Assistant program at RDC, came to RDC 10 years ago. At that time, she was facilitator of the distance learning program. Now, she oversees the distance and on-campus Education Assistant Certificate program which consists of nearly 170 students in total. January 2010 saw the biggest jump in intake for a winter semester start.
Students can study 10 months on campus, or as long as it takes through distance. Some do it in a year, and some take many years to complete their certificate as they juggle life’s duties.
