Self-proclaimed dabbler

When I was five I donned the tutu and took ballet. I cooked the odd meal for Dad at harvest time. I raised a sheep and bottle-fed her every morning at 6:30 a.m. I had a horse for a few years – “Flicka”, of course. I took basketball in grade 12, just because I could and there were no try-outs. I’ve tried this and that. Dance lessons here. Kickboxing there. Maple ice cream? No. Tiger Tiger? Yes!

Now that I am 28 years old, every year I still seek to establish tangible, or high and lofty, goals that I wish to achieve over the coming months. This and that, here and there; ‘I like to be well rounded’ I tell myself.

I am a self-proclaimed Dabbler. What is this you ask? One who is always searching for new experiences. I am always on a self-improvement track and one who runs from boredom and monotony at every chance.

You may relate.

Perhaps as January 1 rolled in you said you were going to exercise more – as millions around the world set that same goal. Maybe you said you were going to try a new recipe every day. Perhaps you wanted to take on some extreme sport or call your family more often.

And maybe you said “Ah, this year, I am going to take a night class.”

Hmmm, maybe this is where dabbling enthusiasts can be appeased. Our Continuing Education department at RDC twice a year publishes a Course Guide. A list that will satisfy from A – Z the opportunity for night classes, summer camps, one day to five week courses to improve that skill or learn a new one.

They provide Workplace Training through the new Centre for Corporate Training. Business, Management, Computer Skills – you name it. Also on the list are classes from ballet (woohoo!) to languages and stained glass to photography. Why not try a fitness class or go on a study tour to Europe?

The dabbling-self-improving-this-will-help-at-my-job-why-not-try-it-I-may-just-like-it opportunities are endless with Continuing Education at RDC.

Now, if I could only ride a horse in a tutu while bouncing a basketball and licking Tiger Tiger ice cream … THAT would be an accomplishment!
