SUNDRE — RCMP in Alberta are investigating after the remains of an adult wild horse were found.

Doreen Henderson of the Wild Horses of Alberta Society says she believes the animal was shot.

Henderson says dozens of other wild horses have been killed in the same area in the last few years, including seven in January 2007 alone.

Her organization believes the same hunter is responsible.

RCMP Const. Chad Pushie says the horse’s death “wasn’t a mistake.”

He says shooting a wild horse is a criminal offence.

“It angers us and breaks our hearts that someone would ruthlessly gun it down like a gopher,” Pushie said.

Henderson said she was out on Sunday with her husband and an equestrian photographer taking pictures of the wild horses about 30 km west of Sundre when they came across the grisly scene.

“We were attracted by the ravens, at least 100 of them,” Henderson said.

Her group is offering a reward of $10,000.
