Red Deer city RCMP say alcohol was a factor in a crash that claimed the lives of two people early this morning on the city’s south side.

Police and Red Deer Emergency Services responded to an emergency at around 2 a.m. at the intersection of 30th Avenue and Ironstone Drive.

The collision occurred between a southbound pickup truck and an eastbound car.

The car’s driver, a 35-year-old woman, and a 34-year-old man, both of Red Deer, were pronounced dead at the scene. Both had been wearing seat-belts.

Police say both victims are related, but no further details would be released today.

The male driver and lone occupant of the pickup truck was treated and released from hospital.

RCMP arrested the 22-year-old man of Sedalia, a small community in Southern Alberta. No charges have been laid.

He will face a judicial interim release hearing sometime today to see if he should be released.

Members of the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Collision Reconstruction and Traffic Services Criminal Collision Investigation teams are continuing to investigate.

The truck hit the driver’s side of the car, which sustained heavy damage.

Any eyewitnesses to the crash are urged to call RCMP at 403-343-5575.

These are the first traffic fatalities in Red Deer since 2008.
