Teen killed in head-on collision

A 15-year-old girl died on Thursday night after a head-on collision on Hwy 595 east of Delburne.

Red Deer Rural RCMP say that at about 9:30 p.m., a westbound pickup truck and an eastbound compact car collided while travelling at highway speed.

They hit each other in the eastbound lane 10 km east of Delburne, half a kilometre east of Range Road 244.

The girl was the passenger in the car and died immediately as a result of her injuries.

A Delburne woman, who was driving the car, was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre for treatment. Her injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

The male driver of the pickup walked away from the scene. A male was later located and apprehended near the scene.

The names of the people involved in the collision are not being released at the request of family.

Police continue to investigate.

Delburne Fire and Rescue, Ponoka RCMP Traffic Services and a collision analyst from the department, Red Deer RCMP dog services, and Red Deer RCMP forensic identification section are all assisting in the investigation.
