Small firefighting force saves main floor of rented home

An Innisfail family has found room with relatives after fire broke out in their rented home on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire Chief John Syroid said only six of his team of volunteer firefighters were available for duty in mid-afternoon, when the fire was reported at 4235 - 54th Avenue.

The six of them did a superb job of getting the fire under control, said Syroid.

There was no one in the home at the time of the fire, which started in the basement, said Syroid.

“Apparently a bed caught fire. It has to be investigated, but at this time we don’t know (what caused the fire),” said Syroid.

“There was a lot of fire in the basement, but it started to die down because it was closed up and there was a lack of oxygen,” he said.

There was heavy smoke damage throughout the house and quite a bit of fire damage in the basement. Most goods on the main floor will be salvageable, said Syroid.
