Second murder charge
A second murder charge has been laid in the death of a Red Deer man whose body was found in a ditch near Raven in April.
Charles Richard Beckett, 47, of Red Deer, who had been charged with accessory after the fact to murder, is now charged with first-degree murder, chief Crown prosecutor Anders Quist said on Wednesday.
Beckett was scheduled to appear in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on Wednesday for a bail review on the accessory charge, but that has been postponed.
His next appearance is now Friday in provincial court.
Larry Allen Scott, 51, has been remanded in custody until June 10 for his next appearance. Scott is charged with first-degree murder, extortion, uttering death threats and assault.
Scott was charged on May 1 with killing Sheldon Mark Hiller, 46, whose body was found on April 17 in a ditch along Hwy 54, about three km west of Raven.
A passerby saw what may have been human remains and contacted RCMP.
Officers from the major crimes unit in Red Deer and Calgary conducted a detailed investigation for about two weeks before laying charges.
Hiller, a widower, had lived in Red Deer for about five years and worked most recently as a neon sign repairman before he was laid off.
