STARS transports Lacombe accident victim

A man suffered critical injuries on Wednesday morning after his minivan clipped a cattle liner before it crashed into a SUV east of Lacombe.

Red Deer rural RCMP say the van was eastbound on Hwy 12 when it crossed the centre line and into the path of a westbound cattle liner.

The minivan then struck a westbound SUV before coming to a rest in the north ditch.

The crash occurred about five km east of Lacombe on the western approach to the bridge crossing the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. Those rail lines serve the Viterra grain elevator.

A STARS air ambulance from Edmonton was called out at 10:15 a.m. to transport the van’s male driver.

STARS spokesman Bart Goemans said a man with critical head injuries was airlifted to Edmonton’s University of Alberta Hospital.

Hwy 12 was closed down for several hours while an RCMP traffic analyst investigated the crash scene.

Members of the Lacombe volunteer fire department, Lacombe Police and Red Deer rural RCMP responded.

Cpl. Andrew Shepherd of Red Deer rural RCMP said it’s unclear why the van driver crossed the centre line.

Shepherd didn’t have an update on the condition of the man at the U of A Hospital as of 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. He said the man was unconscious at the scene.

“The SUV had minor damages and the (driver) had very minor injuries,” Shepherd added.

It appears the rodeo stock inside the large transport vehicle was uninjured.

One tire was flattened on the cattle liner.
