Red Deer man wins $300,000 at Calgary Stampede

The Lions Lucky Loot winner from Red Deer was at work as usual on Monday only hours after he found out that he had won the $300,000 grand prize.

“I still don’t believe it,” said Michael Scott while on route from a job near Rocky Mountain House on Monday afternoon.

“It’s the first bit of luck I’ve had in seven years. Usually I don’t win.”

He got the call during a live televised broadcast at about 12:30 a.m. on Monday morning after the draw was made at midnight.

And by the way, he had a great sleep. Scott intends to use his winnings to pay off debt.

The cement supervisor for Calfrac Well Services Ltd. bought three packages of advance tickets for Calgary Stampede Lotteries for $30 about six weeks ago after receiving a pamphlet in the mail.

Tickets for the individual lotteries are also sold at the stampede.

The number of tickets sold for the Lions Lucky Loot was not available.

The Lions Lucky Loot grand prize was the biggest cash prize among the Calgary Stampede lotteries.

The biggest prize was the Rotary Dream Home, which is worth $841,230.

Altogether, the prizes amounted to $1.7 million.

Proceeds from the lotteries support charities in Southern Alberta through the Stampede’s service club partners — Kinsmen Club of Calgary, Calgary North Hill Lions Club, Rotary Club of Calgary South and the Calgary Marching Show Band Association.
