Bingo, who died by poisoning.

A Blackfalds area man is offering a $1,000 reward for information to help solve the poisoning death of his dog.

Dave Gillispie said Bingo, a 12-year-old mixed breed — Norwegian elkhound, Doberman pinscher, malamute cross — was found ill April 3 after Gillispie, a heavy-duty mechanic, returned home from day surgery around 1 p.m.

Gillespie, 52, lives on an acreage north of Blackfalds, where he has a shop.

“(Bingo) couldn’t walk. And he was lying on the snow, and he was eating a bit of snow,” Gillispie said. “And I knew immediately he was sick.”

He rushed Bingo to the vet, but it was too late. The vet suspected poisoning.

Bingo’s blood was sent away for analysis.

Gillispie went home searching for something in the yard or the shop Bingo could have gotten into while he was away.

He found nothing, except Bingo’s dinner from the past night — half Gillispie’s steak, cut into pieces — vomited intact. He believes Bingo was poisoned on April 2. The dog died April 4.

The toxicology report confirmed the cause was poison. In order to help with identifying valid tips, Gillespie does not want to release what substance caused the death.

Gillispie thinks someone must have tricked Bingo by mixing poison in with some food, perhaps the steak.

Gillispie reported Bingo’s death to the police but he knows they’re too busy to investigate a dog poisoning.

So he’s offering the reward.

“I’m very determined to find out who did it,” he said. “He was the friendliest dog in the world.”

Gillispie isn’t sure what he’ll do when he discovers who’s responsible for Bingo’s death, other than turn the information over to police. But he’s certain news of the culprit will eventually get back to him.

No similar cases have been reported to the Red Deer SPCA or Lacombe County.

“I’m not going to stop,” Gillispie said of his search for answers. “I mean, that dog was my everything.”

Anyone with information about Bingo’s poisoning can reach Gillispie at 304-5369.
