Ever wondered what lies in the future for your schnauzer?
Madame Dee had the answer to nearly any doggy dilemma Saturday.
As part of the SPCA’s Bark at the Bend fundraiser Donna Dee — a.k.a. Madame Dee — was giving paw readings for the furry friends in the crowd.
Not unlike a palm reading, Dee would take a footprint of the dog and proceed to tell the owners if they were about to experience some mongrel misfortune.
“Basically it’s a little bit of intuition, but a lot of it is just observation,” Dee said.
A dog behaviour consultant, who has trained dogs for more than 45 years, she knows something about nearly any canine conundrum. She often takes cues not only from the dog’s paw, but also its eyes, ears, coat and other parts of it’s body.
“(Dogs) understand me and I understand them,” she said.
During a reading of a bichon shih tzu that went by the moniker Ladybug, she told the owners the dog was upset over someone in the family being ill and she tends to steal things, particularly chocolate when upset.
Owners Karlene Omoth and her mother Gaylene Juneau nodded in agreement. As it turns out, Omoth’s brother has been sick and the little dog has a hankering for chocolate.
They asked if Ladybug should be bred again and Dee said no because she isn’t a good mother, to which Omoth and Juneau both agreed.
Juneau said the reading was very accurate.
“Everything she said about Ladybug was true,” she said. As a result Ladybug won’t be having any more puppies.
Omoth said she thought the reading was pretty cool. “We’re really into the spiritual side of things so it’s nice to see someone else’s spiritual point of view of my dog.”
Dee has been doing the pooch prognostication for the past four to five years.
She said since she was a child she has been able to get into dogs’ heads. “Some days I’m on and some days I’m off,” she said.
Dee said dogs can have personalities just like people — some are shy, some are more sociable. Some dogs are dogs dogs, others prefer people or other animals. She helps their owners understand their dogs better and can even help the animal through what is bothering it.
She often uses her skills in her business Oh My Dog! K-9 Consulting Inc. Although she finds it surprising sometimes people are more likely to listen during a paw reading than in a dog obedience class. That’s just how the doggy biscuit crumbles.
