Long weekend opened with tragic crash

An Olds-area mother and son are recovering at home after a crash that killed two little girls on Friday.
Shauna Olsen, 38, was driving home with her three children from a shopping trip in Red Deer at about 2 p.m. when their car collided with an SUV at an intersection near their farmhouse.
Sisters Amber, 2 and Sarah, 6 both died at the scene. Their mother and their 16-year-old brother Michael were injured. Shauna was treated in Olds hospital while Michael was rushed to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.
The SUV driver suffered only minor injuries.
The crash that devastated the Olds family was among the first of five fatal collisions across the province through the Labour Day long weekend.
News services from throughout Alberta report a total of six people killed altogether, including a rollover near Peace River and a two-vehicle crash near Thorsby. The Peace River man died after being ejected from his truck when it rolled on Saturday. At Thorsby, 45-year-old David Hagen diced at a rural intersection.
Two people were claimed in separate crashes in the southern regions of the province.
24-year-old Cody Hellevan of Coleman died on Saturday after rolling his pickup truck on Hwy 3, between Bellevue and Frank.
On Friday, an unidentified woman was killed when the SUV in which she was riding collided with a passenger van at the intersection of Hwys 2 and 3, near Fort MacLeod.
