RCMP continue to investigate a truck accident that tied up Hwy 2 traffic for hours on Wednesday afternoon.
A gravel truck and a tanker truck pulling a pup trailer were involved in the accident in the accident that happened about 3:45 p.m. just north of Red Deer between Hwy 11 and 11A overpasses. The southbound tanker truck overturned in the west ditch.
The driver was checked out by paramedics but was unhurt.
Emergency crews shut down the highway in both directions while cleanup work got underway. Northbound lanes were reopened after 5 p.m. and southbound lanes were reopened during the night.
Only a small amount of waste diesel leaked out of the overturned truck, said Alberta Environment spokeswoman Cara Van Marck.
“It was only about a bucket of diesel. It was coming out of the vents so it was a very slow drip.”
Firefighters were able to clean up the mess in a couple of hours. The fuel was contained to a dry ditch and did not cause any environmental problems.
