The Crown prosecutor will attempt to keep a Blackfalds man in jail following a major drug bust last week, court heard on Monday.
Federal Crown prosecutor Dave Inglis told provincial court that he will oppose any bail application by Shane Clifford White, 23, because he already faces a trial on unrelated drug trafficking charges.
White was remanded in custody and appears again in court on Friday to enter a plea on charges filed against him last Wednesday.
White was charged last week with two counts of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possession of a loaded prohibited weapon, one count each of possession of the proceeds of crime, failing to comply with the condition of a court-imposed recognizance and possession of a prohibited weapon.
He was charged along with another man when the RCMP emergency response team and officers from the Red Deer and Calgary drug units raided a residence and seized loaded guns, 11.36 kg of marijuana, 500 grams of crack cocaine and 700 grams powder cocaine and $65,000 in cash.
Also seized was a loaded AK-47 assault rifle, .357 magnum handgun and a sawed off .12 gauge shotgun in the residence in the Rolling Hills Ridge neighbourhood.
Inglis told Judge Jim Mitchell that White is scheduled to have a drug trafficking trial in January. Those charges stem from another bust on Dec. 2, 2006, when police seized narcotics and the proceeds of crime in Red Deer.
Those charges, which will be heard by a Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench judge and jury, include two counts of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a narcotic and two counts of possession of the proceeds of crime and stolen property. A jury is to be picked Jan. 12 while the trial is set for Jan. 26.
White is defended by lawyer Patrick Fagan of Calgary.
Hector Quijada, 26, of Red Deer, was also charged last week in the bust with one count each of possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime.
Quijada was released to appear in Red Deer court on Aug. 28.
