An Alberta sheriff was one of three people injured Saturday night when a vehicle crashed into his cruiser parked on the shoulder of Hwy 2.
The 34-year-old sheriff had pulled over another motorist for a Traffic Safety Act violation and had his emergency lights fully activated, Const. Doug Dewar of Innisfail RCMP said.
The sheriff, who was in his vehicle, radioed for assistance shortly after his cruiser was rammed by a pickup in the east shoulder of the northbound lane about one km north of Innisfail.
The cruiser was then pushed into the vehicle the sheriff had pulled over around 10.30 p.m.
The sheriff was transported to Calgary Foothills Hospital for additional X-rays as a precaution, Dewar said.
The injured sheriff was treated in hospital and returned home with bumps and bruises.
Guardian Emergency Services personnel witnessed the crash and called additional units including Innisfail fire and rescue.
The 46-year-old male driver of the pickup from Lacombe was transported to Innisfail Hospital and held for overnight observation.
The driver of the original vehicle stopped, a 28-year-old man from Edmonton, was treated at the scene.
Dewar said at this time alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor.
He also said road conditions were bare and dry with good visibility.
An RCMP collision reconstruction analyst from Red Deer also attended the scene.
The investigation continues and charges are pending, Dewar said.
