Delena Dixon, 20, died after being shot in the Samson townsite Saturday night.
The incident is one of three gun-related complaints from the weekend in Hobbema that Hobbema RCMP are investigating.
The first occurred when police were called at 10 p.m. Friday to the Samson Townsite. A man’s arm was grazed by a bullet, but he didn’t require medical attention.
The second complaint was received at 11:40 p.m. Saturday on the Ermineskin Reserve. A 20-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were arrested in relation to that incident. Police said a shotgun was also recovered at the scene. No further information was provided by police as to what happened, the young men’s names or where they were from.
Police were called to the third complaint at 11:50 p.m. Saturday. Police said it took place at the same residence where the man had his arm grazed by a bullet Friday in the Samson Townsite. Police said it appears a gun was fired from outside the residence, entered the home through a wall and struck the 20-year-old female victim. She was flown by STARS air ambulance to Edmonton where she was pronounced dead.
Hobbema RCMP have not said if the three incidents are connected. They have said the three investigations do appear to be gang related.
Hobbema RCMP are investigating the three incidents with the help of the Calgary major crimes unit, the Wetaskiwin/Hobbema general investigation section, the Red Deer forensic identification unit, the Hobbema community response unit and canine unit.
An autopsy on the young woman is scheduled for later this week. No one has been arrested for killing her.
The homicide came on the heels of a recently launched gun amnesty program which was declared in an effort to stop a rash of violent crimes, which include a drive-by shooting in April that wounded then-23-month-old toddler Asia Saddleback. Hobbema residents say there is a turf war between the Indian Posse gang and rival gangs.
Dixon’s mother, Verna Dee, dismissed the police claim that the house was known by gangs.
However, her husband Darren Appleguard, 49, admitted he had gang ties in the past.
Dixon was the mother of an 18-month-old girl.
Police say this is the fifth gang-related killing so far this year in the Hobbema area.
