Nyla, a German Shepherd born in 2002, was found shot on Aug. 16, 2007, near Caroline.

A trial related to the shooting death of a breeding dog for the RCMP’s Police Dog Training Centre is scheduled for May 21 in Rocky Mountain House provincial court.

The German shepherd, born in 2002 and named Nyla, was found shot on Aug. 16, 2007, near Caroline.

RCMP Insp. Lawrence Aimoe, in charge of the Police Dog Training Centre near Innisfail, said the centre lost a phenomenal mother.

“She’s the one who had five of her puppies from one of her litters all graduate,” Aimoe said Thursday from Victoria, where he’s attending a Canadian Police Canine Association meeting.

Dog handlers from across Canada are at the meeting and nobody has heard of a breeding dog doing that before, he said.

Her pups graduated last spring to become police dogs.

Nyla was also in her prime and could have produced more litters.

Brood keepers in the community care for mothers with the centre’s breeding program.

“Instead of keeping our females in doggy jail, we have families that adopt them out.

“What the brood keepers do is supply tender loving care and exercise.”

Robert Gordon Adams, 51, was charged with death or injury to an animal, unauthorized possession of a firearm and storing a firearm in a careless manner.

How sad for us all. These animals are living and breathing beings. They are truly so very invaluable to us and it's a shame that it took one careless/mindless idiot to take it all away! She was beautiful!

Is it just me or is violence against animals rampant in Canada, let alone Alberta? I think its time the federal government updates our archaic laws...

THIS DOG WAS HIGHLY TRAINED, AND I HIGHLY DOUBT IT ATTACKED A MAN FOR NO REASON. IT OBVIOUSLY SELF-RESPONDED TO A SITUATION IT WAS TRAINED FOR. THIS BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL WAS SHOT FOR NO REASON EVER EXPLAINABLE. JAIL TIME INDEED.

If this was such a valuable animal, why was it roaming the country threatening other peoples livestock. If anyone should be charged, it should be the people who were supposed to be looking after it. Keep your dogs off other peoples property!

At no point in this article does it state what the dog had done that " nobody has heard of a breeding dog doing that before..." To say this article is misleading is an understatement, to say it is accurate Journalism is laughable.

Just another example of the police doing something wrong, and then covering it up by charging some poor guy who just happened to be the one defending himself or others.

From what I understand, this was merely a breeding dog for the RCMP, no where does it say it was trained as a police dog. But if it was off it's home property and attacking someone else on THEIR property, whatever force necessary was justified.
