It takes Ben Kuipers (above) of Royal Hill Dairy Farm and one helper about two hours to cover one bay of barley silage with tires. The workers use about 12,000 waste tires that mostly came from the dump and tire shops to hold giant tarps on the silage. The tarps protect the barley and allow heat to build in the piles. The Royal Hill Dairy Farm on Hwy 12 west of Lacombe runs 240 Holstein milking cows.
