A memorial service is being held today for a Delburne girl whose family has suffered two tragedies in the space of a month.

Cassandra “Casey” Wilson, 15, was killed on Thursday, when another vehicle struck the car her mother Kathy was driving on Hwy 595, about 10 km east of Delburne.

The crash happened only a month after fire destroyed the home where Cassandra lived with her brother, Andrew and their parents, Jack and Kathy.

Both parents were away from the home when the fire broke out. Cassandra had been at home with a girlfriend at the time.

It was later determined that a candle had sparked the blaze, which spread from the basement to the rest of the house.

The family had moved in with friends for the time being and were getting help through a fundraising effort spearheaded by Sherry Marsellus, one of Kathy Wilson’s fellow volunteers with the Delburne Fire Department.

Dieter Brandt, principal of the Delburne School, said Cassandra was taking an alternative education, and so did not attend his school. However, counsellors were being brought into the school to help her many friends deal with their loss.

Services have been set for 1:30 p.m. at the Delburne Community Hall. The family has invited people to contribute to Mothers Against Drunk Driving in lieu of flowers.

Facing six charges in relation to the crash is Delburne resident Neil Doucet, 41. Charges include impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
