A 17-year-old male died and a young boy had to be transported to hospital via STARS air ambulance early Sunday morning after a two-vehicle collision near Pine Lake.
Innisfail RCMP were called out to the crash at the intersection of Hwy 42 and Secondary Hwy 816 at 13 minutes after midnight on Sunday.
Police said a truck was heading north on Secondary Hwy 816 when it came to an intersection with a stop sign. The truck proceeded into the intersection, and a van going east on Hwy 42 collided with the truck’s driver’s side door.
Witnesses at the scene began CPR on the truck’s driver within minutes of the collision, and fire and ambulance personnel continued to do so when they arrived shortly thereafter. But the 17-year-old driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
A boy, who was one of the passengers in the van, was transported via STARS to the University of Alberta Hospital. He was reported to be in stable condition at the time a press release was issued by police at 7 a.m. on Sunday.
A male passenger in the truck, the female driver of the van and her daughter were taken to local hospitals by ambulance. They were treated and later released.
Police said neither alcohol nor speed appear to have been factors in the collision. Innisfail RCMP are continuing to investigate, with the assistance of a collision analyst.
Police had not released any names pending notification of family members.
