Red Deer police locked down two schools on Wednesday because of a complaint of a distraught male.

At about 10 a.m., city RCMP received a complaint of a distraught male in a residence on Westpark Crescent. There was concern the male may have had weapons in the residence.

Police Emergency Response Team members responded and access to the crescent was blocked off to traffic, RCMP said.

Due to the close proximity of West Park Elementary and Westpark Middle schools, administration was advised and lockdowns were enacted.

The lockdowns were to prevent any foot traffic in the area. There was no concern of danger to the students.

The male was contacted by phone and came out of the residence without incident. He was taken into custody just before noon.

No weapons were found.
