A man who exposed himself to a mother shopping with her young daughter was jailed on Monday.

James Daryle Hill, 52, was sentenced to 12 months in jail after pleading guilty to charges of indecent exposure and breaching probation in Red Deer provincial court.

Hill received two and a half months credit for time served in custody awaiting an outcome of his case.

The charge stems from a Dec. 7, 2007, incident at a north Red Deer department store.

Hill has a lengthy record of exposing himself in public and received a six-month sentence last week on a 2006 charge.

Crown prosecutor Darwyn Ross said Hill was noticed in the department store by store security, who knew of him from a previous incident at a sister store.

They called RCMP, who arrived to find Hill following a mother and daughter shopping.

Ross said Hill appeared to be fixated on the young girl and when he started exposing himself, the officers jumped in and arrested him.

On Aug. 7, 2006, Hill was charged for exposing himself in public to a teenage girl sitting on a downtown bench.

Several moments later, he exposed himself to two teenage girls walking by.

Hill was remanded in custody on those incidents but released and remanded again when he was charged with a similar incident last fall at a local mall while awaiting the outcome of the 2006 charges.

That was an aggravating factor in sentencing, Ross told Judge John Holmes.

Hill has several similar convictions stretching back more than two decades.

Defence lawyer Arnold Piragoff argued that Hill should receive credit for about a full year in custody for time served.

Hill is already listed on a Canada-wide sex offender registry. He will also be placed on a year’s probation once he’s released from jail.

I think there should be harsher punishment for this guy! We'll likely hear about something awful he has done in the future. Maybe rape, child molestation, or something else. He should be locked up for a long long time!

The man was fixated on a child; tell me he hasn’t done something worse that exposing himself in the past. I agree that he should be in Ponoka for some long term help.

What a sad world that person like him can't keep to himself and he seeks attention from innocent victims. Too bad he was born. Maybe research will be able to dissect psychos' brains in the future to pinpoint what their problem is.
