Collision kills Red Deer woman

A 19-year-old Red Deer woman is dead following a head-on collision between two vehicles on Hwy 12 west of Stettler early Wednesday morning.

A 36-year-old Red Deer man was also seriously injured in the collision that happened one km east of the Hwy 11 and 12 intersection.

At about 6:15 a.m., Stettler RCMP were called to the scene where they believe the female driver of a west-bound car crossed the centre line, into the path of an east-bound pickup truck.

The jaws of life was required to free the female driver from her vehicle. She was transported by STARS air ambulance to Calgary where she died of her injuries.

The male driver of the truck was transported by ground ambulance to Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre and was transferred for further treatment.

Police say both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

The male and female drivers were the only occupants in the vehicles.

Both lanes of Hwy 12 were closed for about four hours for the police to investigate.

The collision is still under investigation. No charges have been laid at this time.
