A special dedication was held for Red Deer’s custom-made clock tower outside the Old Court House on Ross Street on Monday morning.

Merv Thurmeier of the Downtown Red Deer Rotary Club described the occasion as a historic day to the 75 people who gathered for the event.

The four-sided clock is mounted on a pole, is adorned in black with gold trim and has four golden lion heads underneath the clock face.

The base includes plaques of the names of Red Deer’s five young citizen of the year recipients and the names of Red Deer’s 31 citizen of the year recipients. There is with room for more names.

Rotarians Ray McBeth and Jim Foster, co-chairs of the citizen of the year committee, were applauded for bringing the clock idea to fruition. They have worked on the project for more than two years.

The project was spearheaded by the Downtown Rotary Club, which, with three other local Rotary clubs, raised $55,000 for the clock.

A luncheon was to follow at Red Deer Lodge for recipients of the citizen of the year and young citizen of the year awards who were present.

The clock has a seating area at its base at the corner of Ross Street and 49th Avenue.
