RCMP and emergency crews responded to a situation in Clearview in Red Deer Tuesday afternoon just after 3 p.m. One man was taken into custody.

Traffic in the Clearview neighbourhood in Red Deer was shut down Tuesday afternoon by police who were responding to a complaint about a distraught man armed with a gun.

A 28-year-old man was held up in a garage at a townhouse at 300 Cornett Drive, on the corner of 30th Avenue.

Armed officers with the Red Deer City RCMP Emergency Response Team arrived on the scene at about 3:30 p.m. and soon after the man was arrested.

“The male was taken into custody without incident,” said RCMP Cpl. Kathe DeHeer.

She could not say what type of weapon was found.

A small fire was started in the garage, where the man was held up. Firefighters responded and quickly put the fire out.

A nearby neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said a young woman and an infant left the townhouse shortly before police arrived.

She said a young couple moved into the townhouse last summer.

“I’ve seen her outside crying a few times. They were both out the other day crying,” the neighbour said.
