BEAUMONT — A five-year-old boy was killed Saturday on a farm south of Edmonton when his head became trapped under the wheels of a utility trailer.

Paramedics were unable to revive the boy, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

As news filtered out, at least a half-dozen vehicles carrying people in tears rolled up the gravel road to the farmhouse lined with trees. Mounties were not saying much about the tragedy except that it had been very traumatic for the family as well as for the emergency crews.

“This is about as (bad) as it gets,“ said Cpl. Dave Wilkinson of the Beaumont RCMP.

Mounties are doing an investigation for the medical examiner, but the incident did not appear to be criminal, said Wilkinson.

He added that the accident was not agriculture-related.

A neighbour said two young boys, about five and six years old, lived on the farm.

It was also a multigenerational family who had been living on the farm for many years and were well known to the area, he said.

The Beaumont fire department, as well as two EMS units from the Parkland Ambulance Authority and four RCMP officers, attended the scene.
