EDMONTON — Alberta is preparing to crack down on excessive drinking in bars by imposing minimum drink prices and restricting happy-hour times.

Solicitor General Fred Lindsay says the changes that will be announced fairly quickly are designed “to keep people in a more sober state so they react in a more reasonable manner.”

Lindsay was commenting on a weekend incident in which two Edmonton police officers were swarmed by a dozen young people who had been drinking in the downtown area.

The minister described the swarming incident as “disturbing.”

Earlier this year, the province put a new training program in place for bar and nightclub security staff aimed at reducing violence and increasing safety.
