The 25th edition of Agri-Trade kicked off on Wednesday, with a half-dozen businesses recognized for their products or services that have benefited the agricultural industry.

Bayer Crop Science Inc., Frostfree Nosepumps Ltd., 20/20 Seed labs Inc., MacDon Industries Ltd., DuPont Canada and Seed Hawk Inc. were all named Ag Innovation winners during the Agri-Trade VIP luncheon at the Westerner Chalet.

They were among 12 finalists for the awards. Bayer Crop Science was acknowledged for its Infinity herbicide, Frostfree Nosepumps for its product of the same name, 20/20 Seed Labs for its DNA-based clubroot detection test, MacDon Industries for its M150 self-propelled windrower, DuPont for its PrecisionPac herbicide dispensing system and Seed Hawk for development of sectional control for metering on air seeders.

The winners of the 2008 Agri-Trade bursaries were also recognized at the VIP luncheon.

Receiving the $1,500 awards for application toward their school tuitions were Olds College students Grejanka Martens, Megan Roxburgh, Tristan Jones and Peter Bakkers and Red Deer College students Jamie Bates, Milou Rupert and Jordan Vincent.

Another bursary, presented by the Alberta Beef Congress Society, went to Olds College student Lisa Stevens.

Mike Axworthy, president of the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce — which helps organize Agri-Trade each year — pointed out during the luncheon that the annual four-day show generates $15 million in economic activity for the region during the week.

Agri-Trade continues at Westerner Park through to Saturday, with its hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $10, with children under 12 admitted free.
