Maskwa, a rare white black bear, is settling into her new home at the Discovery Wildlife Park in Innisfail. Transferred from the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg, six-year-old Maskwa and another bear, 14-year-old Brunswick, are on loan to Discovery Wildlife Park while a new enclosure is constructed. According to zoo officials, black bears can vary in colour from white to black, including all shades of brown. They can also have white markings on their chests. Native North Americans consider the white bear to be sacred and refer to the bears as “Spirit Bears” says Discovery Wildlife Park owner Doug Bos. The bears will be in the park for up to three years while their new habitat is built.
