The Ponoka Composite High School Broncs senior girls basketball team hosted its 16th annual Swoosh tournament over the weekend, which saw a number of teams from central Alberta competing.

Despite her team winning only one of its three games played throughout the course of the tournament, Broncs coach Jody McElroy feels the tournament was a major success, as it allowed her players to find out which areas of their game need improvement as they enter the second half of the season.

“The tournament was great. Every game was ridiculously close, and all the teams were really, really good,” said McElroy, whose Broncs lost to the Lacombe Rams and the Holy Redeemer Rebels of Edson before defeating the Holy Rosary Raiders of Lloydminster in the final day of the tournament.

McElroy feels that the tremendous effort put in by her players over the weekend is indicative of their determination and dedication, and she is optimistic about her team’s chances of success going into the second half of the season.

“It’s still early in our season, and the girls are getting better which was evident over the weekend,” she said. “The intensity is there, and they work really well together — it’s a great group of girls. We just need to work on our shooting.”

Broncs players Morgan Wiese, Danielle Davies and Jenica Krause all received MVP nods over the course of the tournament, which saw eight teams competing over two days.

The Broncs will now take a two-week break before preparing for their next game or tournament.
