Two suspected drug traffickers were arrested by RCMP last week as they were driving into the Samson Reserve.

Hobbema RCMP, while at a roadblock Jan. 10 at about 6:30 p.m. on Six Mile Road on the Samson Reserve, noted a vehicle approach the roadblock and then attempt to avoid the north end of the roadblock.

RCMP Const. Perry Cardinal said when RCMP members approached the stopped vehicle, a strong odour of marijuana was noted from within the vehicle.

The two occupants were arrested and a subsequent search of the vehicle found a large amount of marijuana. The vehicle was towed from the scene to Hobbema detachment and searched with the use of the Wetaskiwin police dog service. Another, smaller amount of marijuana was recovered. The total amount of marijuana recovered has an estimated street value of $25,000.

RCMP have charged Curt Michael Smith, 31, and Charlotte Ganske, 30, both of Westerose, with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and trafficking a controlled substance.

The accused were scheduled to attend Wetaskiwin provincial court on Jan. 17.

Young offender arrested in Ethan Yellowbird death

On Jan. 10, RCMP arrested the third young offender in Edmonton. All three teens from the Hobbema area with ages at the time of the homicide of 13, 16 and 17 respectively. All three face charges of manslaughter, intentional discharge of a firearm and endangering life.
