Students of Ponoka Elementary School made the most of an exciting start to their long weekend on Feb. 8, as the school held its first Winter Carnival.

A number of different games and events took place throughout the afternoon, and allowed students the chance to enjoy being outside in relatively mild temperatures.

Grade 1 teacher Erynn Swett organized the carnival and was pleased with how well it was received by students.

“This is the first year we’ve done it here, and hopefully it’s not the last,” she said.

Students participated in 24 different activities both indoors and out, and most appreciated being able to have a day of fun prior to the beginning of a long weekend marked by a teachers’ convention last Thursday and Friday.

“I love days like this,” said Aaliyah Dillon, a Grade 4 student at the school.

Events ranged from dog sledding to seal races, and included “all winter activities that (students) can do in the snow,” according to Swett, who noted certain activities such as a snow sculpting had to be dropped from the day’s events due to a lack of snow.

Near the end of the afternoon, all 470 students of the school joined thousands of others around the province in celebrating Winter Walk Day as they walked around the perimeter of the school grounds for 15 minutes.
