École Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School students gather in Festival Hall for the public school board’s Speak Out event on Wednesday. A total of 39 Grade 9 to 12 students from Lindsay Thurber participated in a Speak Out forum, organized by Alberta Education to get students talking and thinking about education. Opinions and ideas appear on an interactive website www.speakout.alberta.ca and shared with educators and government. Jennifer Keller, director of student engagement with Alberta Education, said the forums give students a voice. “The most important thing about student engagement is how it makes students care about their schooling. Research shows student engagement improves academic success and actually has an impact on high school completion,” Keller said. During the 2009-10 school year, 26 forums will be held around the province where students get to talk about what works well in school, what doesn’t and what can be done to improve it. Ideas from Lindsay Thurber students will be posted on the website next week.
