A Red Deer commercial realtor is adding his name to the list of city councillor candidates.

Clarence Torgerson, 58, with Realty Investments Corporation, has been a commercial realtor in Red Deer since 1973, and says the city has both financial challenges and opportunities ahead.

He said one of the city’s undeveloped assets is Riverlands, west of Taylor Drive, that will be turned into a mixed district of medium-to-high density housing and cultural, entertainment and community gathering spaces.

“We need to do as much as we can. We need to keep in mind this is a unique piece of property that we’ll only have one opportunity to develop so we need to do something that is appropriate for the city in that area,” said Torgerson who was a member of the city’s Downtown Planning Committee for three years.

With Riverlands, the city has the chance to recover some of the costs of relocating the public works yard. Another way to cut costs is to reconsider all the consultants the city hires, he said.

“We have excellent staff and they do excellent work. I wonder if there isn’t more of this work that could be done by them.”

The city needs to be careful of its spending for a while, Torgerson said.
