Red Deer College has spent $300,000 on a new brand initiative college representatives say hope sets the school apart in an increasingly competitive post-secondary market.

The new branding includes a new logo, with RDC in black and an arc of green in behind it. The college also has a new tagline: “when you get here you understand.”

The college’s website has already been transformed by the new brand. Other changes will slowly roll out over coming months.

By next month new stationery will be put in place, business cards will change soon after, and all promotional material will reflect the new brand by the end of this term. Signage will begin to change over this fall and continue through to the fall of 2010.

RDC president Ron Woodward said re-branding is something an institution does every 10 to 20 years and they wanted to do it right.

The change was an 11-month process of talking to community members, business leaders, parents, prospective students and current students about their perceptions about RDC.

Woodward said they found in many cases people were confused about what Red Deer College was all about.

“It’s a great place. People love to come here, but they weren’t sure what we were about,” Woodward said.

“As we try to position ourselves in the marketplace as a great learning institution that we know we are, we need to be able to convey that message to people.”

He said the brand is about more than the logo. He said it’s important they are in the marketplace and they are seen as a place where people want to be. “I think some times unfortunately we’ve taken pride in that fact that we’re a well-kept secret. Well, I’m hoping that we can stop being a well-kept secret and start being a well-known secret.”
