A significant funding commitment from Ponoka County will boost plans to rebuild Rimbey’s outdoor swimming pool.

This week, the county announced that it will provide $500,000 toward the $2.25-million project if it goes ahead, town CAO Russ Wardrope said on Thursday. The town has been looking for funding options to rejuvenate its pool, first built in the late 1960s and now suffering from the affects of advancing age, said Wardrope.

Having the county’s promise in its pocket will give the town that much more sway in applying for funding from Recreation Infrastructure Canada, which falls under the federal government’s Economic Action Plan, he said.

Once the federal grant is approved and the amount is known, the town will approach the province for additional support, said Wardrope.

Only when all the monies are in place will the proposed renovation move into the design phase, he said. In the meantime, the town has asked interested citizens to attend a presentation and have their say on what they would like to see from the proposed project.

A public meeting has been set up for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Rimbey Community Centre, 5109 - 54 Street.

The town will give a presentation showing what it has done so far and will then invite comments from those in attendance.
