As the only Alberta community left battling for the title of Hockeyville, Blackfalds is counting on votes from fellow Albertans to help them win $100,000 for arena upgrades.
On Monday Blackfalds was named one of the top 12 communities in the Kraft Hockeyville 2010 contest to see which Canadian community has the most community spirit and passion for hockey.
Blackfalds Minor Hockey Association has led the charge to take the Hockeyville crown.
Blackfalds Mayor Melodie Stol said local hockey volunteers have been a real inspiration in the community.
“They’ve really worked hard and really promoted hockey and Blackfalds together and it’s just such a good fit,” Stol said on Tuesday.
“Blackfalds is such a great hockey town. We would do Kraft well by being named Hockeyville.”
The top 12 communities were chosen by an in-house panel. Finalists will be reduced to five according to public votes. The deadline for voting is March 21 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Voting for the final five communities will run from March 27 to 31.
If Blackfalds wins, the cash would be used enhance Blackfalds Multi-Plex built in 1991 and expanded just a few years ago.
Stol said even though it’s a fairly modern facility, the community and the demand from user groups have grown.
Myles Peake, the town’s parks and facility manager, said a win for Blackfalds would also benefit Central Alberta. But it won’t happen unless people vote for Blackfalds.
“It’s all based on voting now.”
