A woman is dead as a result of a collision near Stettler while a separate collision has seen a driver charged.

Around 4 p.m on May 23, emergency services were called to the scene of the fatal collision at the intersection of Highways 11 and 21 near Nevis.

Motorists already at the scene where a Volkswagen car collided with a semi-trailer unit were providing first aid to the driver, and lone occupant of the car. EMS and RCMP units from both Bashaw and Stettler along with members of the fire departments from Stettler and Alix attended.

Unfortunately, the 39-year-old woman was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the 54-year-old man driving the semi-trailer was uninjured. The name and hometown of the woman has not been released.

Traffic along both highways was re-routed for a few hours to Highway 12 as the emergency crews dealt with the scene and conducted an investigation.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the Bashaw and Stettler RCMP with assistance of the police service’s collision reconstruction analyst as well as the provincial Commercial Vehicle Enforcement branch.

Stop sign

In a separate collision around 11:30 a.m. on May 21 at the intersection of Highway 12 and Secondary Highway 601, the 38-year-old driver of a Dodge 1500 truck was given a ticket for proceeding when unsafe to do so.

RCMP from Bashaw along with the Alix Fire Department and EMS units from both Stettler and Lacombe arrived at the scene where the truck and a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze collided. The car was heading west along Highway 12 and ended up hitting the truck, which was proceeding south through the intersection on Secondary Highway 601.

The driver and passenger in the car were taken by ambulance to hospital as a precautionary measure, while the driver and two passengers of the truck were not injured.

An investigation found that the truck, while having properly obeyed the stop sign, travelled into the intersection in an unsafe manner and caused the collision.
