NexSource Centre public opening expected for March 31
MARKING MILESTONES - The NexSource Centre is nearing completion with the Town of Sylvan Lake recently having gained access to the facility. A public opening is scheduled for March 31.
The shiny new doors of the NexSource Centre are on schedule to open to the public on March 31 at 9 a.m.
Town of Sylvan Lake staff marked a milestone this past week as they were granted access to the facility. On Monday evening during a regular Meeting of Council the mayor and council heard a progress update on the facility from Director of Community Services for the Town of Sylvan Lake, Rob Lebsack.
Previous milestones made at the NexSource Centre have included the commissioning of the ice plant in Arena 1 and the beginning of the ice making process and the painting of the lines. Lebsack stated in his report how the ice making is going ‘smoothly’.
NEXSOURCE - Town staff recently finished painting the centre ice NexSource Centre logo inside the new arena.
The curling rink was planned for commissioning and the cooling of the slab on Monday, March 13 as well. Staff and contractors began filling the pool on March 3. Lebsack stated that process is going well also.
Staff explained the NexSource Centre’s Buy A Seat Program has been delayed by the design process as new building code compliance requires that additional aisles and handrails be added to the project. The seats will not be installed in time for the Grand Opening in May; however, a seat display will be created to highlight the contributions of those who already purchased their seats.

Lebsack’s report indicated the NexSource Centre’s Child Play Space has also been delayed due to a design flaw which saw the initial play equipment designed too large and did not meet code for allowing acceptable space away from fire sprinklers or acceptable lanes of access and egress. These code requirements have been met in the re-design process, however the delivery dates will not be in time for the public opening.
During the interim a graphic representation on the play equipment will be blown up and posted on the windows of the space area along with the opening date of the play space. The play equipment will be installed and operational for the Grand Opening in May.
Mayor Sean McIntyre stated he felt the report was one of pros and cons.
“With a project of this size and scope, I think it’s understandable to have certain delays. I’m happy they’re listed here and upfront,”said Mayor of Sylvan Lake, Sean McIntyre. “It’s great to hear we’re still looking at an opening day of March 31. I’m sure there have been other issues with construction over the course of the project and I’m happy to hear it hasn’t bumped us out of that month is something worth smiling about.”
“None of this would have been possible without the sponsors who contributed to capital financing here. I really look forward to the public opening and turning key for the first time on March 31.”
A number of pre-opening events are being scheduled within the NexSource Centre for Town Council, sponsors and Town employees including a NexSource Power Family Fun Day on Saturday, March 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; as well as a sponsors and fundraising committee event on Tuesday, March 28 from 6-8 p.m.
Town staff have planned a media tour of the facility on Wednesday, March 29 from 1 to 2 p.m. and a Town staff and families event on Thursday, March 30 from 5 to 9 p.m.
